Just wanted to post an awesome song by Phil Wickham. Listen to the song and read the lyrics…they are powerful!
[This post is a part of the "How To Get Great Guitar Tone" series.]
Previously in the series, we discussed guitar choice. Now, it is time to talk about effects pedals! I am a huge fan of effects pedals and there are certain things you need to know before buying them.
There are many pedals out there that are terrible! It is important that you do your research on them. When you realize that you need a pedal, check out videos, ask more experienced players, and try them out yourself at a guitar shop. Investigating pedals also helps you develop a better knowledge of effects pedals.
This is a very important thing! No matter how many special thousand dollar effects you think will help your tone, if you do not have a good guitar, it will not matter. I first started out playing acoustic guitar. After about two years of playing acoustic fluently, I decided that I wanted to move to the electric guitar. I had no clue where to even begin! I did some research, and I had no idea what I was looking for. I ended up buying a cheap stratocaster for $83 used from a local guitar shop. This guitar was not terrible; it just was not good. I got me through my first few years, but I had no clue what kind of great tone I was missing!
A few months ago, the cheap guitar broke. I was sound checking for worship, and it totally stopped working. I got a replacement guitar for the night from a friend’s dad…and behold- I discovered humbuckers!
When you are looking for a guitar, there are some things you want to consider. Whether it is electric or acoustic the same things apply.
This is a guest post from Sarah Davis. She is someone in my youth group who has felt God calling her into the mission field.
This past summer, I felt the call to missions. I was at camp listening to the evening message, and the Lord called me onto the mission field.
I looked up some statistics on the population of the different countries around the world and how many of those are missionaries, and I was shocked with what I found. I’ll take you on a trip around the world to show you some interesting statistics, but it’s not just statistics- it’s souls that are at stake.
There are 311,000,000 people in America. 170,000,000 have no religious affiliation. While we are attending church, over half the population of America is doing nothing. There are some places in America that will have no churches within hundreds of miles! This means that the gospel is not being shared.
I am really excited to launch this series! I am really passionate about guitars. I do not just enjoy it because it is an awesome hobby, but I enjoy it because it is one of the many ways I can serve God. Guitars play an important part in worship. It can either help or distract. Every guitarist wants his tone to open the heavens from striking a chord, but few come close. There are certain things someone must do in order to get great tone out of guitar gear. You can go the route of a I’ve-got-tons-of-money-so-I’m-gonna-buy-the-most-expensive-and-great-sounding-gear guy, or you can learn a few things and spend the least amount of money to sound great.
I have no clue how long this series will go, but I will carry it out as long as I feel God wants me to. For some reason, I have felt that God has wanted me to write on this. I will still have the typical posts and devotions, but I will do this series along with it. I hope many of you can learn from some things I wish I was told on my guitar-playing journey.
A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the blog traffic and the engagement level on websites declining. I think that it is definitely something to think about if you haven’t. I talked about how my traffic has considerably gone down in the past few months. Looking at the past 5 days, however, I can say that it is increasing considerably. I’m grateful for that, but the traffic is still not where it used to be.
In the comments, we discussed a little more about the lack of engagement on websites. Here were a few comments worth sharing:
“It’s a valid question. I think there are ups and downs to our blogging and responses for sure. Some of it is driven by changes in social media (etc.) that point people towards our blogs, some of it is driven by the busy chaos of life, and some of it is driven by content…”
“A good question, and one I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. I don’t really have an answer for you except “yes and no”
So this is an interesting review video. I only did it because a friend told me I should make a video to demonstrate how bad it sounds. So here it is:
As you can see and hear from this video, the compressor does not add anything good to your guitar tone. Compressors are great effects when used properly, and if they are decent compressors. This one just wasn’t! Danelectro makes great effects, but stay clear from the compressor. Any drives or modulation effects (except this one) are good…I don’t know where they went wrong on this one?
There is really nothing good about this pedal. It is very noisy. It is crucial to stay clear of noisy effects. It not only annoys you and others, but it kills tone. Not good!
There are a lot of great compressors out there, but this just isn’t one of them.
More reviews to come soon!
